Readiness Checklist - Extending Implementation
The checklist for this phase involves being ready to building out your entire Comprehensive Literacy Plan. Many of these items will have been done in earlier phases. However, a comprehensive plan will need to address all of the items below.
Align all levels of leadership to a commitment to Structured Literacy.
Update your District Mission, Vision and Strategic Plan to align with evidence-based practices, Structured Literacy and the Science of Reading.
Detail out a full Structured Literacy Coaching Model.
Detail out a full Three-Tiered Instructional Plan
Create a full MTSS/Assessment Framework aligned with the instructional plan.
Have a complete and continuous Professional Learning Framework and Plan.
Have a leadership adoption and support plan and confirmation procedure.
Identify and implement classroom walkthroughs and self-reflections.
Have data-based decision protocols and professional learning for all educators to implement.
Put in place Structured Literacy PLCs, Dedicated Planning Time.
Make sure all parties are aware of district literacy practices and goals, aligning on common language.
Begin to create a phased Continuous Review Cycle Structure for constant system auditing and improvement
Conduct an annual state of literacy communication
Create a Science of Reading/Structured Literacy research base that acts as a key resource to rely on for updates and changes.
Ignore opposing statements like “We have always done it this way” or “Things aren’t working, so we need to change” and commit to saying “All of our practices must be based on the best evidence we have.”
If you are missing many of these elements, you may not be ready to build out a full Comprehensive Literacy Plan and are still in the Extending Implementation Phase.
